Andy Van Schaack
Andy Van Schaack applies his business experience and scientific training to solve real-world problems. Through his twenty year career in the high technology sector, he has managed research, marketing, engineering, sales, and support organizations—in both large corporations (Apple Computer and Echelon) and start-up companies (smart.fm and Livescribe).
While at Apple Computer, he worked as a Service Product Manager. He moved to Japan to manage Apple’s higher education sales initiative. At Echelon Corporation he was responsible for the development and on-going management of new name accounts for the western United States. He has led three companies as Chief Scientist or Senior Science Advisor (Cerego of Tokyo, Japan; Livescribe of Oakland, CA; and Zoomii of Saratoga, CA), inventing new technologies, defining product solutions, and conducting research studies to evaluate the efficacy of the products to improve human performance.
Andy earned his Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from Utah State University. While a graduate student he worked for his university in the Office of Technology Commercialization as a licensing associate where he was responsible for the protection, development, and commercialization of faculty inventions and creative works. He is currently an Assistant Professor of the Practice at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education. His NSF-funded research is focused on the development and dissemination of effective, efficient, and accessible technologies to improve learning and performance. He teaches courses in research methods and frequently lectures on entrepreneurship at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management.
