If you haven not had a chance to hear Gary Vaynerchuk, you should if he rolls into town in his book tour during the month of April.
He is a passionate and informed speaker with a number of imaginative stories to tell about the benefits of customer intimacy. The theme is old, his approach is new. As Gary puts it, customer service is playing defense.
The comments below are from the SXSW 2011 talk he gave, and the presentation at Kepler’s bookstore in Menlo Park on April 4.
Marketing is a marathon, not a sprint. While “content is king”, “marketing is queen, and she runs the house” is one of his many quotes. Also, “Context is King” meaning the importance of relationships… hence the notion of a “Thank You Economy”. If I am connected to you via family, friends, even twitter, I am more likely to do business with you, all other factors being equal.
Gary’s theme is marketing innovation for the modern times… which he relates back to the 1920s and 1930s when we knew our local shopkeepers. The internet (17 years young) has closed the gap again so we are back to the 20s when reputation and word of mouth ruled the day.
He recommends using search.twitter.com, tumblr.com and for all of us. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
